Opening night alone was Jaw Dropping starting with the exceptional film “Marriage Story” starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johannson among a bevy of uber talented actors. Great writing, great performances…. . And the festival never stopped its “WOW” factor from that moment.

Step and repeat with the beautiful Alexa Georgas who is an Honorary Board member as well as producer, her own film “Easy Does It” seeing its premier at the NOLA fest, and Texas based designer Joseph Shortell….. we had a ball. Every day and night there was something fascinating to learn, see, do.

This year, selected filmmakers  also received $1,000 to go towards support for their project as well as for living, travel, and other expenses during this professional development experience. Really fantastic.

My roundtable discussion was originally slated for 45 minutes but lasted well over double that amount of time.  It was wonderful to interact with filmmakers on all levels  and discuss in depth what being a Makeup Department Head and Makeup Designer for film means on many levels:  from the aspect of design, to our “duties”;   including but not withstanding the following:

Breaking down a script, budgeting, scheduling, training staff, doing copious research, meeting with the Director, the Producers, the Actors,  the Costume Designer, the Heads of all of the Departments. Filmmaking is a COLLABORATIVE process.At the Production meeting we discuss in great detail what the entire project  will entail  to meet completion, and of course, our daily filmmaking activities.

During my roundtable, I spoke of a film that I had Designed and Department Headed which has been filmed in Louisiana: The Free State Of Jones.

In this example, I described how I was told to create a wound makeup on one of our principal actors, Mahershala Ai in just 45 minutes, on the spot. (A makeup of this nature would take approximately one and one half hours with the correct prosthetic pieces available and prepared in advance.).

This was a challenge as we did not have pieces on hand for our actor and had to improvise.  We succeeded in perfecting this makeup in 49minutes.  We were satisfied.  We are very familiar with the necessity to be able to perform under pressure, to be creative and to problem solve as economically as possible for all concerned.

I had an exceptional makeup team, and I must mention Kris Evans, who is a brilliant makeup artist in her own right, and did magnificent work for this time period (the civil war): beautiful hair work.

Another film that was JAW DROPPING for me was Jo Jo Rabbit. If you haven’t seen it on a large screen uninterrupted, I highly suggest to do it ASAP! What a brilliant creative mind has Taika Waititi, who wrote, directed, and starred in this tour de force.

The film festival satisfied on every level, and NOLA shone ever bright as an epicenter of culture and creativity with 500 plus filmmakers from every corner of the works in attendance.

Thank you for having me share my career experience in this forum for growth and learning, and cultural acceptance.

Hats off to a hugely successful and enjoyable festival in the Big Easy!

Owned and curated at the highest level of excellence by owners Terry and John Havens; Cal-A-Vie has earned it’s reputation as being one of the world’s tops spas. I was the guest presenter for international celebrity makeup artistry, alongside the incredibly talented and beautiful Marie Ferro top celebrity hairstylist who is a frequent presenter at Cal-A-Vie. I had been looking forward to collaborating with Marie for years and it was a dream to do so.

It would take my writing a book to truly do justice to all of the magic and healing that occurred during my special week-long stay at Cal-A-Vie.

I have traveled the world over as spokesperson on topics ranging from “beauty from within” to self-healing, motivation, manifestation, international makeup artistry, and self actualization. At Cal-A-Vie, where I also participated in the program, I would say that I personally was transported to the highest levels of friendship, knowledge of nutrition, brain function, fitness, relaxation, and personal spiritual growth.

Not to mention the fact that the entire property of Cal-A-Vie is absolutely stunningly beautiful as you will see below.

Before my arrival, I spent time hiking all around the beautiful Island of Corsica and made this little video for all of my ladies. Why? Because, quite simply, If you’re going to talk the talk, you had better walk the walk! ( Literally!!)

Every day I was truly spoiled with the love and interaction between all of the guests and lovely staff . I had the most perfect fabulous room where I worked….. please really look a this video…… i was quite spoiled indeed!!!

The General Manager of Cal-A-Vie is Debbie Zie, pictured here with me at the breathtaking chapel high above the beautiful vista of the property. Debbie is a positive force of nature and exudes the ethos of Cal-A-Vie: kind, knowledgable, compassionate, joyful, relaxing. She is and has been from the day that we met years ago, truly a ray of sunshine.

In the afternoons, I had the lovely luxury of swimming almost exclusively in this beautiful swimming pool (see below),, as everyone was engaged in the very many wonderful activities that Cal-A-Vie offers: Spinning, Interval Weight Training, Vinyasa Flow Yoga, Water Pilates (FABULOUS!), Chakra Yoga. “ Realign Through Movement”, nutritional seminars, Dietetic seminars, Functional medicine education, (to mention a few)…WELLNESS! and the utterly transformational Labyrinth Walk.

The Labyrinth Walk. A journey into peace and self-discovery.

As I said, I could write a book about my life changing experience at Cal-A-Vie…. but this will have to do for now! All I can say to all of you is try to take the opportunity at some point in your busy lives to come to this oasis of serenity and healing. You will emerge rejuvenated and probably will have made some like minded new life long friends!

This blog is dedicated to the memory of the late and great Karl Lagerfeld. The runways were filled with his sentiment as he touched the world of fashion in such an enormous way. He was a Fashion Designer, Caricaturist, Artist, Photographer, and let us not forget: He was The Creative Director for the House of Chanel from 1983 until his death. He will truly be missed and he will continue to inspire all. Auf Wiedersehen, kreativer Engel Karl, du wirst vermisst werden!

Delicate Smokey Eye on Bella Hadid

The overall vibe for trends for Spring and Summer 2019 was gentle and restrained. The trends were so soft, light, and delicate, that the few smokey eyes that were seen seemed to really stand out. In fact, they were rather subdued. The delicate smokey eye was achieved with taupes, (Chanel) , midnight blue (Nars), purples (Dior), and is well articulated in the above photo of Bella…. soft and feathered!

Clean Skin

Skin reflected the NON foundation look, and the artists on the runways generally were using a hint of concealer and a hint of primer….. only if truly necessary!

Glowing Skin

Trend 2019….. out with the Matte! Skin trends are all about beautiful shiny healthy and glowing skin. Dewy skin is a must, and even the cheekbones are highlighted with something of a shimmy nature such as Chanel’s Essentiel Glow Stick, Mac Strobe Creme, and Julie Hewett’s Cheekies and Shimmies. I especially love that JHLA has made a shimmy in a lipstick tube form now….. for easy application. No powder on the face this season!

Golden Eyes

Just a hint of golden eyeshadow, or a splash of an eyeliner in gold, created an immediate quick and yet luxurious effect. In some cases the entire lid is covered; in others the inner and outer corners of the eyes are highlighted . In any event the effect is equal parts glamorous simplicity and sophistication, all the while seemingly as natural as a sun kissed day! I especially love the Chanel “Ombre Premiere”

Powerful Red Lips

Come what may, red lipstick will never go out of style! And this was present during all of the shows. The reds tended toward glosses but there was a fair share of mattes and they were stunning. I especially love Chanel Rouge Coco, and Chanel Women’s Rouge, as well as the ever classic Ruby Woo by MAC ( Stunning), Tom Ford’s Flame, and the classic beauties by Julie Hewett: Belle and Coco noir red lipstick. In fact Julie’s entire Red Noir series is not to be compared and although matte, does a deep moistening due to the presence of camellia oil in the formula. Find her on Instagram @juliehewett la…. These lovely photos with Karl and of Kaia Gerber capture the entire trends for Spring and Summer 2019….. Fresh, clean skin, little to no under mascara, highlighted cheekbones, and lip gloss or red lipstick. All four fashion weeks were dominated by my favourites… sheen, shimmer, and flawless skin.

Supermodel skin as seen here on Isabel Marant… Flawlessly applied makeup: She is wearing a tinted moisturizer with sunscreen ( the perfect season foundation), I prefer dermalogica ultra calming, ultra sensitive tint and secondly Laura Mercier. Both give skin a perfect finish as if there were nothing there, and actually act as a protector, primer, and foundation in one.

Next, use a creme soft blush, (Of course I love my first choice which is Julie Hewett Cheekies as they have a base in camellia oil. Makes the skin glow and look alive.This cheekie can be applied to the lids and to the lips! Why use 15 products when you only need one to accomplish this natural look?

Nars, Tom Ford, Chanel, Dior, MAC, Charlotte Tillbury, and YSL all have their wonderful versions of creme, alive cheek color if you have a preference or want to have that knowledge when you walk into a cosmetic department section…you’ll know what to seek out!

A light mascara, matched to the brow, and a very soft matte touch of pink on the lips (Tom Ford Lipstick: First Time, one of my all time favorites.) and you have conquered this look!

An equally important trend…..All things glittery, sparkly and shiny! This trend will be seen everywhere during this season.

I particularly love the sheen seen here on our Top Shop models…

Fenty shiny beauty on our dark skinned beauty with an individual flair, using the same glow to accentuate her arms and shoulders… be creative and make good multi-use of your products! Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Palette is a great one to do this quickly and effectively.

Model #2: On show at Topshop, Undercover and stella jean… Splashes of color on the lids, organic eyebrows, more of an organic feel even if more colour is used around the eyes… and even stick on gems! love them! Be creative. To be subtle but accentuate, put a tiny gem on the inner most part of your eye…it will make them pop magically!

And as I mentioned above, use color. And have fun doing so. Be an individual. Be yourself! Be your own kind of beauty!

Let’s examine makeup trending for this last month of the year and this holiday season!

Certainly Pat McGrath had a stellar year with the launch of her amazing products! Hats off to Pat and all of the positivity that she brings to artists everywhere!

The trending looks for holiday are truly a silver glitter eyeshadow and a burgundy lip! Here are variations therein. Here is a visual tutorial for you all. I particularly love these shimmers from Dior!

Christian Dior again comes away with a flawless two sets of beautiful eyeshadow quads to design the eye as simply or as extravagantly as desired. Let your imagination run wild!

It is always amazing to see the timelessness in certain designed makeup and beauty. For me, this 2017 look is inspired by the beautiful Iconic Elizabeth Taylor. I feel that this season pays hommage to her in it’s exuberance.

Here Jlo is beaming with the day version of this holiday look, and at her side a bit of added silver sheen to the lids on our gorgeous brunette. I personally love these YSL lipsticks, they are creamy and fabulous and make the lips look voluptuous. They too are timeless.

And here: Holiday look by day, using this palette by Viseart, and this gorgeous lipstick by Tom Ford….Smoke Red. A favourite. It transcends all skin tones and brings light and soft sophistication to any face, with or without makeup.

And Finally…HOLIDAY BY NIGHT! Here is the look and here are some tools to achieve this look…! Again, truly …just be yourself! Be creative and enhance your own natural beauty in all of its perfection. That is the beauty of being an individual.

Fall is a time for reflection, rejuvenation, and reaffirmation.  So take the time to pamper your skin:  salt sea scrubs, body exfoliation… all things skin revitalizating! Exhale those winter pores right open.  Take this time to cleanse, renew and restore yourself for the winter months.

The Fall -Winter 2017  makeup look above as seen on the runways in Paris empahizes a fresh face with dewy looking skin …. simple yet glowing.
Eyebrows are your Fall 2017 ” wingman “…… boldly framing the face they set the stage for you. No need to do a heavy makeup , just let your brows do the talking.  The eyebrows do not have to be perfect or sleek. Highlight around the eyebrows for more emphasis and definitely on the cheekbones to elevate the face.  We are emphasizing natural here!  As seen on Kaia Gerber.

Simple, ultra dewy skin can be achieved using London Dewy Stix Luminous highlighting balm. This brings a” lit from within” glow on bare skin or on top of makeup.  This product is never sticky or tacky to the touch.  Also try Julie Hewett shimmy in Goldie or Pinkie (pictured below). This product can be used all over the face to highlight , even in the corner of the eyes , on the brow arches,  and on your cupid’s bow of the lip .

Eyeshadow is another must have for this Fall. Eyeshadow must be simple and only one colour. We are using this to add depth to the face.  Defintiley not to overpower but to accentuate your own natural features. Pick one colour closest to your natural skintone and blend over the eyelid, to just under the brow arch , and under the eye as seen below:

Both Simi Haze and Jordyn Woods show varying degrees of eyeshadow that works with their skin tone sans eyeliner.   The ladies on the left have used a rosy shade as they have a pale pink undertone to their skin.  Jordyn ( on the right) is olive skinned . She applied an eyeshadow with a yellow undertone to blend effortlessly into her skin.   The eyes stand out dramatically even without a smokey eye or heavy liner due to the emphasis on the brows and cheekbones.  Thus the eyes are emphasized but not at the expense of the face, brows and of course, the lips. With that said… who doesn’t love a little pop of colour on the Lips at the end of the day?Fall – Winter  2017 Lips  are accented with Red .  Our Muse Bella has captured this look of strong eyebrows, milky skin, highlighted cheekbones,  and skintone eyeshadow perfectly!   Here she has added a beautiful pop of colour on her lips with Dior 999.  Simply flawless !

Stay healthy and sexy with a beautiful full bold red lip!  This look is one of understated elegance and freshness.  The red lip creates a classic aura of beauty while resting in simplicity. As promised I am reporting from one of the more exciting movie sets that I’ve experienced,  and I have been so fortunate to experience the very best!  I am currently working on a project called “ Nappily Ever After “ starring the formidable talent that is Sanaa Lathan. This movie is about EVERY woman’s journey with her hair and the symbology of hair in this and throughout  all cultures.  I am so proud to be a part of this project and I think that Sanaa’s devotion to her role is breathtaking.  ( She blew up twitter and almost shut down the internet when she finally shaved her head !)

This process and the character development is gradual and integral to the story. I will only reveal some behind the scenes fun, as well as to say that my inspiration for the make ups has varied with the hair designed by Larry Sims the fabulous, as we must create in concert with one another.

Sanaa is quite glamorous with various hair looks.  Depending upon which hair look,  either the eyes were accentuated or the lips.  In all cases, I have chosen muted peaches for her lips mostly, and particularly when bald, I have elected to not have lashes, and merely sculpt her beautiful features so that she looks even more as a Nubian goddess.

Below are two inspirations for the muted versus bold looks for the requisite scenes.

Nude lips, sculpted bone structure .  Dita Von Teese, NYX, Dior     2: Bold lips and a more dramatic eye for an evening statement. MAC, Nars, Julie Hewett newsprint bleu
I have drawn inspiration from this beautiful under eyes twenties look which I adore in it’s exotic simplicity.
Mac Mascara , Tom Ford eyeshadows, Trish McEvoy dark shadow liners, mac Lipstick with Julie Hewett camellia  lip Balm

And these muted peaches and soft bronzes worn by Chloe Kardashian which look stunning on film.

I am using Dior shadows, Mac Ruby Woo lipstick, MAC Mascaras…. a lot of MAC!!! Nars duos which are stunning Charlotte Tilbury, Dior gorgeous 5 palette , Chanel. Smash box, Tom Ford, NYX, Viseart, Murad, and Shea Moisture makeup which is superb….. to name a few…!

Movie Star Glam: By Nikoletta

For this month of August I will focus on Movie Star Glam in various manifestations.

I’m posting a few examples of my favourite beauties to give you DIY tips and my makeup trailer hints about movie star glam from the inside out!

Why not start with our own fabulous star Goddess who oozes this type of glamour  always… Leslie Zemeckis!

Here Leslie is emulating the things that I love the most about this chic and timeless look: Hair, skin, lips, and eyes.

1. Lips – Luscious red lips (these two colours Tom Ford Flame and Ruby Rush…. are  gorgeous!)2. Eyes – Stunning eyelashes; soft and lush and very 1940’s. Here she articulates the upper lash and liner to give the eyes a grand, open soulful look.  I love Monda # 307 half lashes enhanced by either Tom Ford, Lancome Monsieur Big, or L’oreal Voluminous Original mascara. Pro tip: L’oreal Voluminous has officially knocked Maybelline off its throne for me and every supermodel that I know!!! It is accesible for all!

3. Skin – Her clear milky glowing skin and a healthy luminescence is the prescription for  inner and outer beauty for every woman.  For the inner self; two tablespoons of pure unflavoured Norweigan cod liver oil DAILY…. yes it tastes terrible but the effects are amazing! Of course, pure Greek olive oil is a must, at least two tablespoons everyday. Skin needs to be lubricated from the inside out to remain elastic.

For the outer self…a makeup primer such as Mac strobe to be applied under the foundation. This creates an already healthy underglow and nothing needs to be added for the girl on the run!

I’m on my way to work with the beautiful and fabulous Sanaa Lathan.  Here are two examples of different glam looks on Sanaa. One as the sultry siren with her red lips at the NAACP awards.

1. Lips – She is wearing Julie Hewett Belle Noir mixed with Femme Noir – a perfect combination. Long lasting matte beauty.

2. Eyes -She has on Monda # 307 half-lashes mixed with some singles and mascara (hint: L’oreal) for a perfect almond eye. I paired this with the Blacktrack liner creme by MAC or Nars which I applied with an angle brush.  Eyeshadows are all from the Viseart palette #01Neutral Matte – a must have for every woman.

3. Face -To finish it off we have the Beautiful Orgasm blush by NARS

Here is another glam look with her hair up and a more natural lip. The cheek contouring is dramatic, articulating her highlights. Her eyebrows of course, stand out due to the high ponytail….. a great look for her and so different from the other! Simply Striking Sanaa.

And finally two gorgoeus looks on our modern muse Bella Hadid

Timeless beauty here on Bella.

1. Lips – A matte red, reminiscent of Chanel’s Rouge Allure Velvet in Rouge Charnel.

2. Eyes –  I would use Diorshow Fusion Mono #621 Mirror and # 661 Meteore, then I would use Diorshow Proline #082 Anthracite for the eyeliner, and prime her lashes with the Diorshow maximizer 3d and either Diorshow Fuller Lashes or …….  the L’oreal Voluminous Mascara as the finishing touch!

3. Skin – It’s all about the skin when it comes to nude looks.  Her body is glowing, her cheeks are highlighted. Her hair is pulled back to show an articulated eyebrow and her eyes, just as with our other two beauties, have a very sexy almondesque design which makes them pronounced and alluring.
For me, its always about the skin and body care from the inside out. Everything else is an enhancement.

 My favourite look of the summer  starts with Julie Hewett ‘s  bold red lip Rouge Noir by night with a gold shimmy shimmer on the lids, black mascara, flawless skin.  This same look can be used with a natural beauty day makeup  and a nude shimmer lip for day……  Edie is the perfect colour for day lips…..

As I get ready to Leave SONY studios  Hollywood for NYC and the IFFA’s I prepare my goodies!

 Some summer favourites  you will see on Lara Dutta At the Bollywood Awards ceremonies, and I will show them below. Everyone will be fabulous at the IFFA’s!   The IFFA’s are the most coveted and highly anticipated award celebration that honours the very best of Indian Cinema!  With the highest level of achievement seen through the ultra glamorous IFFA statuette!   Gold of course!!

Julie Hewett has been espousing the 5 minute makeup since the inception of her line. It’s what women on the go need to be able to do with ease and sensuality.  I love what Charlotte Tilbury has done here with this fabulous limited edition “  Natural Beauty”  palette …. radiance enhancing natural beauty in 5 minutes!  fantastic!

Don’t forget to really make the eyes pop with a nude or white inner bottom eyeliner.. ( JHLA omit pencil, my fav)

FROM BOLLYWOOD AT THE IIFA AWARDS 2017  TO HOLLYWOOD AT COMICON AND THE TCA’S : Television Critic’s Association Press Tour 2017!!!

As promised for the fabulous Leslie Zemeckis’s THE BURLYQ,   I will show actual examples of the “it look”  for summer 2017,  and the beautiful products the I used on my actors!

Here are three variations on beautiful Bollywood Actress Lara Dutta for the IIFA’s…. daytime beauty leading into night glam!

 For the first look, I used the fantastic limited edition Charlotte Tilbury natural palette as seen in my last installment for THEBURLYQ…. this palette is fool proof as it has a label for each  part of the face: three for the eyes, two for the cheeks and two for the face, which means highlighting and contouring. I used this on each actor and enhanced with other fab products…!

 The second look features the exquisite Christian Dior Nude Air Luminizer and Tom Ford Shimmer duos, Mac Blacktrack eyeliner, Julie Hewett Rouge Noir red lips,  Tom Ford mascara, Charlotte Tilbury powder….. flawless beauty even in that New York City humidity !

The third look is now a gorgeous lip by Tom Ford, “First Time”  Mixed with “ Pink Tease”, Eyes are lined with “Night Clubbing”; a single eyeshadow  by NARS, which I apply with an angle bush wet-to-dry, along the upper lid line as well as on the inner upper lid line!  And then I used the fabulous duo by NARS “ Adoration”.  Lara’s foundation is a mix of Makeup Forever “high definition” , and Charlotte Tilbury “Magic “.  Gorgeous!  Concealer by YSL, #3  mixed with moisturizer for a dewy finish.

Next, Two high fashion beauty looks for an elegant evening featuring  Bollywood beauties Lara Dutta and Deepika Padukone….. Lara has a very smoky eye with a nude lip, and Deepika has a bold lip with a sightly smoky eye.  Both simply stunning!

Back to Hollywood and Comicon in San Diego….Eliza Coupe is shimmering in the summer golds wth a gorgeous nude/ pink lip by Chanel, Eyes adorned with Charlotte Tilbury’s beautiful quadra eyeshadow, the “Golden Goddess”.  Gal Gadot has the slightly smoky eye and a beautiful red lip.  Flawless skin, both of them!

Eliza, golds, flawless skin , nude lips… Gal bold red lips, Cate smoky eyes and a nude lip….Comicon Classy!

For my latest installment for the wonderful website ww.Theburlyq.com. I have selected a few more of my favorites beauty and makeup secrets and tips.  Everyone please enjoy!

1. I love all things NARS, particularly the single eyeshadows with their deep, rich pigment. Night Flightand Night Clubbing are two of my classic favourites.   At this precise springtime moment, I especially love the new Charlotte Gainsbourg NARS 2017 Portrait of the Artist Series…particularly Velvet Duo Eyeshadow-“Old Church Street” (limited edition, everyone!!) and the Au Poil Brush Roll…flawless!

2. Another product that I will never leave home without, and if I had only one thing that I could take (besides my skincare oil!), it would be this product only! Les Sourcils de Chanel.  The trio.  Eyebrows can make or break a face, period. This palette with these three colors works for every woman on the planet! For someone who’s tried everything possible regarding eyebrows this is THE product. I impulsively decided to shave mine off when I was a ballet dancer as I was creating a character. All fine and well except for the fact that they never quite grew back properly! This product, particularly its miniature brow brush, is something I apply in the morning and do not have to touch until I wash my face at night. FANTASTIC product.

3. For a shimmery, sexy, glistening, healthy-looking body and glow, (not to mention a fabulously sensual scent), Tom Ford Soleil Blanc is a stand-alone product. This body oil can make any woman’s skin look flawless and rejuvenated……. Gorgeous from the red carpet to your everyday life, enjoy the beauty of this product…there is really nothing that Tom Ford does that isn’t utterly fantastic.

4. In conjunction with Julie Hewett lipliner pencil Contour, I absolutely love Yves St. Laurent Rouge Volupté colors #1 Nude Beige and #7 Lingerie Pink. These lipsticks are creamy and lush. With the final added touch on the Cupid’s Bow of the lip of Julie Hewett Pink Shimmy…your sensual mouth will drive the world mad! This is a gorgeous combo as seen on this makeup I recently did on Indian Bollywood Superstar Lara Dutta Bhupathi                                                                     

5. As for makeup foundations, these are four of my favourites: Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Foundation, the always fabulous Armani Luminous Silk Foundation, MakeupForever Ultra HD used in conjunction with the Ultra HD Skin Booster….this I use on every film; the perfect dose of flawlessness for every skin tone. Really beautiful for African American and South Asian skin types! From La Mer: the Soft Fluid Foundation…….. sheer perfection!

6. Dior singleeyeshadows are sublime. I particularly love Diorshow Mono #994 Power. This is a beautiful violet colour which can be used wet-to-dry as an eyeliner or blended to make a smoky eye.
